AHS received sportsmanship award

Asheboro High School received the “Super Sportsmanship Award” last week during the North Carolina High School Athletic Association annual meeting in Chapel Hill. This is one of two new awards tri sponsored by the NC Coaches Association, NC Athletic Director Association and the NC High School Athletic Association.

The “Super Sportsmanship Award” was established to recognize a school that has been ejection free, has a plan to promote and implement good sportsmanship, welcoming to fans, makes appropriate accommodations available to officials, and their own fans demonstrate excellent sportsmanship.

The presenter stated “this school has made treating the visiting fans and teams a major priority, and their booster club assists with the hospitality provided to visitors. The school is also continuing a streak of ejection free years.” He went on to say, “plans are for the coaching staff to undergo the NFHS coaching education next month, and the school has a meeting in the spring for all prospective student athletes and parents. The spring meeting is in addition to the mandatory pre season meetings, where the appropriate behavior expected of the school’s athletes is discussed.”

Sam Whitley, AHS athletic director, Dr. Larry Riggan, AHS principal, and Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent, accepted the award.
