AHS students earn theatre awards

Two one-act plays, No Problem and Hush Little Celia, were presented at the annual North Carolina Theatre Conference regional high school festival held October 31 and November 1 in Winston-Salem.

The Festival consisted of a variety of One Act Plays produced by schools from all over the central region.  Students in Asheboro High School’s first year theatre program, a.k.a. the zero period theatre class, competed against fifteen other schools in the region during the two-day event. Drama professionals judged the students' performances on acting, technical proficiency, and overall performance of the piece.

Individual acting awards went to juniors Elizabeth Lail and Jamey Williams in No Problem; and freshmen Kalyn Sisco and Patrick Sullivan in Hush Little Celia. Excellence in ensemble went to the cast of No Problem; and the Best Ensemble award went to the cast of Hush Little Celia.

Asheboro High School was the only school in the competition to receive Superior ratings for both productions, and the play “No Problem” placed third overall and runner up to the state competition to be held later this month.

“I am so proud of these young people and I am honored to work with such a talented group,” said theatre teacher Devan Ward. “They are very dedicated and come early every morning to take an extra class at 7:30am and their hard work paid off.”

The next two shows by the zero period Theatre class will be Children’s theatre productions of Cinderella, and Cinderella and The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf on February 18 and 20 during the school day. All five elementary schools have been invited to attend free of charge.
