AHS Symphonic Wind Ensemble
The Asheboro High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble is one of only three high school bands in the state invited to perform at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Annual Conference on Tuesday, November 13 at 10:30am at the Benton Convention Center.
“We are truly honored to perform before the state Music Educators Association,” said Mr. Homiller, AHS director of bands. “This level of recognition is a tribute to the strength of our band program and the dedication of our student musicians.”
The concert will include “Fantasia on Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” by Mark Camphouse. This piece was commissioned by the AHS Symphonic Wind Ensemble in 2005 to commemorate Asheboro City Schools Centennial. The concert will also include performances of Mozart’s “Requiem” and a composition entitled “Lonely Beach,” depicting the 1944 invasion of Normandy. “Lonely Beach” will feature several AHS band alumni as auxiliary musicians, including Clarke Carriker, Beth Higgins, Ricky, Richard, Robert and David Cox, Ed Bunch, Philip Hamrick, Zac Lee and Amanda Smith.
Conducting will be Mr. Phil Homiller, AHS director of bands and Mrs. Suzanne Benhart, associate director of bands, along with guest conductors Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent, and former band directors Mr. Eddie Harrington and Mrs. Mary Beth Smith.
The concert is free and open to friends and supporters of the Asheboro High School band. The concert is scheduled for Tuesday, November 13th at 10:30am in the upstairs, SE convention hall of the Benton Convention Center, downtown Winston-Salem.
