Benhart receives award

The North Carolina Chapter of the American School Band Director’s Association has honored Mrs. Suzanne Benhart, Co-Director of Bands at Asheboro High School with the prestigious ENCORE Award. The ENCORE Award recognizes outstanding young band directors with fewer than seven full years in the profession, who have demonstrated great future potential as music educators and a desire to serve their district and state organizations.

“I can think of no one more deserving of this honor,” said Phil Homiller, AHS Director of Bands.

Mrs. Benhart is the primary instructor for the Symphonic Band, Percussion ensembles, chamber ensembles and the Advanced Placement Music Theory course, in addition to assisting with the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and in the administration of the entire band program.

“To those of us who work with her each day, this kind of recognition is no surprise and is long overdue.  The positive difference that Mrs. Benhart has made in the quality and general atmosphere of the AHS Band program is impossible to measure.”

Mrs. Benhart holds the Bachelor degree in Music Education from Augustana College and the Master of Music Education degree from UNCG.  She is in her fifth year teaching at Asheboro High School and is very active in the NC Music Educators Association, serving as Treasurer of the Central District Bandmasters Association.  She can regularly be seen performing with the First Presbyterian choir and the Randolph Jazz Band.

Benhart will be presented the ENCORE Award plaque in the fall during the NCBA meeting at the 2011 NC Music Educator Association conference in Winston-Salem.
