Cadet Elliott selected for Honors Camp

AHS AFJROTC recently received notification from Headquarters AFJROTC that one of our cadets has been selected to attend the highly coveted Air Force Junior ROTC Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp for the year 2008. Selected to attend one of several camps to be conducted at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma this summer is: Cadet Technical Sergeant Monica Elliott. Cadet Elliott will attend Honors Camp, July 12-17, 2008.
 
This Secretary of the Air Force special program is designed to introduce high-achieving high school cadets to aerospace technology educational opportunities and aerospace science related careers. It also provides the cadets with the opportunity to experience a hands-on curriculum including visits to college campuses, air and space operational units, research labs, historical sites, aerospace industries, and provide each cadet with an incentive flight on board an Air Force aircraft.
 
Out of more than 104,000 potential nominees, approximately 944 nomination packages were submitted to the headquarters, with each AFJROTC unit allocated a specific quota based upon their total enrollment of cadets in the program. AHS was allowed to submit three nominations. Of all the nominations, approximately 432 cadets were selected to attend one of several camps to be conducted this summer. Criteria for nominations included having a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4 point scale, enrolled in or completed college-prep math and science courses, demonstrated leadership potential, and the potential and desire to pursue technical/aerospace fields of study in college and exhibit the character, drive, and determination to pursue a technical/aerospace related career in the Air Force.
 
Colonel Carle Hall, Senior Aerospace Science Instructor and SMSgt Ben Davis, Aerospace Science Instructor at AHS, selected the cadets to be nominated, and Colonel Hall submitted nomination letters and assisted the cadets in completing their packages. Colonel Hall stated that we are extremely proud of our nominees and wish that all three would have been selected, but he realizes that the selection board had a very difficult task, taking the top 1% of all AFJROTC cadets. This significant achievement reflects great credit on AHS, our AFJROTC unit, and on cadet Elliott and her parents.
