Community support sought for book drive

There is no doubt that developing good readers is the foundation to academic success. As summer approaches, Asheboro City Schools is reaching out to our community to help “Bridge the Summer Reading Gap” by making sure all students have access to books in their home. As reading expert Richard Allington points out “young readers who don’t continue to read over the summer, especially those who are reluctant or at-risk are likely to lose crucial ground.”

To facilitate summer reading, Asheboro City Schools will be collecting books to distribute to students at each of our five elementary schools. Our goal is to provide books to as many students as possible (K-5); therefore, response to the book drive will determine the distribution method for each school. The more books we collect the more opportunities for our students.

Please help us bridge the reading gap by dropping off gently used or new books appropriate for elementary students (K-5) between April 21 and May 5 at one of the following locations:

Asheboro City Schools Central Office, 1126 South Park Street
Carolina Bank, 335 S. Fayetteville Street
Chick-fil-A, 1212 East Dixie Drive

Those who prefer to make a financial contribution for ACS to purchase books may send donations to the Central Office at the address above. Checks should be made out to Asheboro City Schools. Each book and contribution will greatly impact the future of our young readers.
