Elementary Choral Festival set for April 16
Asheboro City Schools’ fourth elementary choral festival will be held Friday, April 16. Festival activities will conclude with a free public concert at 7 p.m. at North Asheboro Middle School (NAMS). The concert will also feature Earth Spirit Taiko, a Japanese drumming ensemble under the direction of Mr. Jim Sink.
The elementary choral festival, a vision of city music teachers Sally Barnes, Susan Jarrett, Cindy Watson and Laura Payne and provides an opportunity for vocally talented students to be exposed to a guest clinician.
Students from all five City elementary schools were chosen by their music teacher to participate. Students and parents signed letters of commitment for rehearsal attendance, behavior and high academic achievement. Following the selection process, eight weeks of after school rehearsals began.
“The students have worked so hard and have grown emotionally, mentally, and academically”, said Cindy Watson, Balfour music teacher. “This has really given them a sense of community as they represent their schools and look forward to meeting friends before they move to middle school.”
Students will attend an all day rehearsal on April 16th at Balfour Elementary School with guest clinician Lisa Qualls, choral director at South Asheboro Middle School, and Sally Barnes, accompanist.
