Elementary Honor Chorus to perform April 15th
Asheboro City Schools will celebrate their 5th Annual Elementary Choral Festival on Friday, April 15, 2011. The festival began five years ago with an Innovative Teaching Grant and has been continued by elementary music teachers, Sally Barnes, Susan Jarrett, Laura Payne and Cindy Watson. The goals of the festival are to provide clusters of students from the five elementary schools choral enrichment, exposure to a guest conductor's knowledge, and social opportunities to establish friendships of common interests before progressing to middle school.
Preparation for the choral festival began in January when twelve students from each school began rehearsing with their perspective music teacher after school to learn six choral selections. All students will rehearse together on April 15 during the day at Balfour Elementary School with guest clinician, Tom Shelton, and perform a free community concert at the NAMS Theater that night at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Shelton is a church music director, published composer, professional accompanist, world renowned choral clinician, and outstanding male role model. He was the accompanist for the Honors Elementary Chorus at the Music Educators' Conference this past November in which ACS students performed. It was then that the music teachers and Honors students agreed Mr. Shelton would be fantastic as the 2011 clinician.
