Preliminary AYP numbers for 2010-11

Preliminary state testing data used to calculate federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2010-2011 school year were released today by the NC Department of Public Instruction. These results are preliminary pending State Board approval on August 4, 2011.

“This year marks the next in a series of increasingly higher target goals to achieve adequate yearly progress,” said Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent.

This year, North Carolina’s target goals increased to move the state closer to the required 100 percent proficiency target for 2013-14. As a result, for a North Carolina public school to make AYP in 2010-11, 71.6 percent of students in each subgroup in grades 3-8 must be proficient in reading and 88.6 percent must be proficient in mathematics. For 10th graders, 69.3 percent of each subgroup must be proficient in reading and 84.2 percent must be proficient in mathematics.
AYP goals are challenging targets and our staff and students have worked very hard to reach these higher standards. While we celebrate successes at each school, we realize we still have much work to do,” continued Frost.
“I am especially pleased that McCrary School achieved AYP, all five elementary schools improved their performance composites, and Lindley Park achieved School of Distinction status with a performance composite of 80%.”

Reading proficiency in grades 3-8 improved from 58.6% to 60.3%, up 1.7 percentage points. Mathematics proficiency in grades 3-8 improved from 76.6% to 79.1%, an increase of 2.5 percentage points. Science proficiency in grade 5 increased from 58.4% to 61.8% and in grade 8 increased from 60.7 to 64.8%.
Additionally, the graduation rate for Asheboro High School has improved from 76% for the Class of 2010 to 84% for the Class of 2011. “This is a major strategic goal for us, and we are very excited to have exceeded our goal for 2010-2011,” said Frost.
“This accomplishment has resulted from many years of work and the collective efforts of all staff, students and parents.”
Other contributing factors to the improved graduation rate include GEAR UP, AVID, NOVA Academy (alternative diploma program), and early identification of students at risk of not meeting grade level standards, positive behavior support, pre-kindergarten programs, and a K-12 focus on college and career readiness.
McCrary and Loflin schools will continue in school choice, and Teachey School will be offering school choice to their families for the first time. Just as it takes two consecutive years not making AYP to get into school choice, it takes two consecutive years making AYP to exit school choice. Parents with children in these three schools will be notified by mail in early August about their choice options.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a requirement of the federal education law called No Child Left Behind. AYP disaggregates the student achievement data by subgroups to more easily identify groups of students that may need additional help in order to close the achievement gap.
For AYP purposes, a subgroup (school as a whole, white, black, native American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, multiracial, limited English proficient students, students with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged students) must contain 40 or more students who have been in membership the full academic year. The AYP goals will continue to increase in three-year increments until 100% of students are required to perform on grade level as required by 2013-2014.
