Smith to participate in PTLA program
Chameeka Smith, AHS Nova Academy coordinator, has been selected to represent Asheboro City Schools in the recently developed Piedmont Triad Leadership Academy (PTLA). The Piedmont Triad Leadership Academy is a one year-long, cohort-based program that provides outstanding school principal preparation to exceptionally talented individuals who will lead high need schools. PTLA is a new initiative funded by North Carolina's Race to the Top grant.
PTLA participants attend full-time and are paid during the 12 month program. The program includes rigorous summer coursework followed by a school leadership internship conducted during the regular K-12 school year.
PTLA is a partnership among Alamance Burlington School System (ABSS), Asheboro City Schools (ACS), Guilford County Schools (GCS), Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WSFCS), Piedmont Triad Education Consortium (PTEC), and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG).
Smith joined the staff at Asheboro High School in January 2009 to facilitate the NOVA Academy alternative diploma program. She holds a bachelors degree in Occupational Heath and Safety, Technology Education licensure and a master’s degree in Vocational Industrial Education from North Carolina A & T University. Smith previously taught at Davidson Community College and as an adjunct instructor in the online education program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
