Teachey students participate in World's Largest Concert

Guy B. Teachey School is one of 5 schools in North Carolina chosen to be represented in the 2011 World's Largest Concert. This popular event, sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, raises the importance of music in school while featuring school ensembles from around the world. It has been a highlight of Music in our Schools Month, the month of March, since 1985. The sing-along concert linking students around the world through music has reached an estimated 6 million students, teachers, and music supporters in recent years. This year's program features themes of U.S. and world cultures, and music's power to transform lives.

Music teacher, Sally Barnes, and 3rd grade teacher, Jennie Bray, worked together with Ms. Bray's class. Mrs. Barnes taught the students one of the concert songs, "El Quelite", in Spanish and in English. Students also learned about different types of music and musical instruments of Mexico. Ms. Bray taught several lessons on the customs, food, traditions, plants, and animals of Mexico. The filming for the concert was done by Juan Villa of Villa Photography at Sunny Slopes Farm in Asheboro, which is owned and operated by Roger and Brenda Pritchard. A DVD of the program, featuring recordings of school ensembles from around the nation will be viewed at participating and featured schools on Thursday, March 10, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time. It is possible that the local public access channels will be broadcasting the show.
