Summer Opportunies with GEAR UP NC
There will be 15 local scholarships available to rising 9th-11th grade students. The application
process will begin on April 1, 2009 -April 24, 2009
Interviews will be held April 27, -30, 2009
All students selected for the scholarships will be notified by May 4, 2009

NC State – Veterinary School:
NC State University is offering an innovative summer program focusing on veterinary medicine and life sciences. The 5-day program, entitled The GEAR UP Experience at NC State: Pre-College Academy for Veterinary Medicine & Life Sciences will be coordinated by the Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs in partnership with the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Each day’s schedule will include academic enrichment in veterinary medicine and/or life sciences, seminars on college success, and study circles on college access and success.
The week at NC State will also feature structured evening activities that will give students the opportunity to develop social skills, self-confidence, and take a break from the daily academic schedule.

UNC Asheville – Mountain Adventure:

Grades: 9th and 10th
UNC Asheville’s goal is to provide a safe and exciting environment for each student to grow as a person, learn about the college experience, have wonderful outdoor adventures, attend special events, and meet wonderful new friends and mentors during their stay. Activities include SAT Prep, a tour of campus, financial aid information from CFNC, as well as career and college major exploration. In addition, students will work on self-esteem and develop team building skills through challenges such as a low ropes course, white water rafting and rock climbing. Centralized transportation will be provided.
UNC Wilmington – Film Studies:
On the Scene at UNC Wilmington, UNC Wilmington’s summer enrichment programming for GEAR UP NC, will introduce the university’s film studies department and local, nationally recognized, film industry to students. This opportunity will enable students to implement practical fact-gathering processes in exploring possible career choices, applicable for pursuing a career in film or other industries. In addition to the major/career exploration activities, youth will engage in skill-building sessions designed to increase their readiness for citizens in a global society. Activities will develop social and cultural skills, with instruction in business and dining etiquette, diversity and communication. Students will also receive a guided tour of the university’s campus, meet with admissions and financial aid counselors and interact with currently enrolled students to learn of educational opportunities available at UNC Wilmington.

NC State University Shelton Challenge
The General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership at NC State is offering a transformational summer program focusing on developing and enhancing life-long leadership skills personally and future aspirations. The 6-day program, entitled
Each day’s schedule will include interactive higher level thinking activities centered around the program’s five cornerstones: honesty, integrity, diversity, social responsibility and compassion. Students participate in 360 degree team reflection daily, placed and evaluated as team leaders, and service project in the local community.
The week at NC State will also feature structured evening activities that will give students the opportunity to develop social skills, self-confidence, and take a break from the daily rigorous schedule. Teams will be responsible for coordinating and implementing the night activities for the rest of the teams to enjoy.

Grades: rising 9th, 10th, and 11th graders
The Shelton Challengewill be coordinated by the General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership center with the support of the Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs, and numerous other university departments, including Admissions, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Housing, and Student Diversity. The program will begin with a Sunday afternoon check-in and adjourn Friday of the same week; it can accommodate up to 40 GEAR UP NC students between the two weeks who will be rising 9th thru 12th graders.
