Partners and Volunteers

All stakeholders are encouraged to support the well-being and academic success of Asheboro City Schools students through family, school, and community collaboration.

Each of our schools use volunteers in a variety of ways – tutoring students, listening to students read, lunch buddy, mentor, testing proctor, office support, field trip chaperone, etc.  Schools can use additional support in many areas, whether it is once a week, once a month or once a year.

In 2008-2009 Asheboro City Schools began a partnership with Communities In Schools (CIS) of Randolph County. Mitzi Cartwright is our local CIS coordinator and she plays a large role in recruiting and training volunteers. The primary focus of CIS in Asheboro City Schools is to assist our schools at the middle and high school level, however, Ms. Cartwright works throughout all eight schools. In general, the greatest need is in the area of tutoring. Many students simply need a caring adult to provide additional support, encouragement and one on one attention. Adults that have the time to consistently meet with one or two students throughout the school year are always in need.

Asheboro City Schools has several very successful faith based partnerships where a church has partnered with a school (typically within close proximity) and offered tutoring to at-risk students identified by the school. Some groups volunteer during the school day, while others offer an after school program. The students excel and volunteers are rewarded through the relationships with the students and watching students progress academically. Some groups donate school supplies, provide financial support for low income students to participate in field trips, or periodically hold an appreciation luncheon for teachers on a workday.

All school volunteers are subject to a criminal background check and must complete a volunteer form before they can work one-on-one with our students.

Schools do provide training and on-going support for volunteers. Volunteers simply need a heart for children and time.

When businesses and community organizations partner with schools, they generate a wealth of opportunities for students. But students and teachers aren't the only beneficiaries.
